LATEST TECH & GAMING NEWS:

ATI seem to be enjoying their stay at the top of graphics performance and have just released three new products which will attempt to cover the whole of the desktop market.
It's already been three months since ATI stunned the graphics world with the release of the 9700 Pro. The card managed to combine high-end performance with, good driver support. The latter had been ATI's achilles heel in the past.

ATI will attempt to maintain the same level of success with the three new products which are targeted at the Enthusiast, Performance Mainstream and Mainstream markets. The new boards are the 9800/Pro, based on the codenamed R350, the 9600/Pro, based on the codenamed RV350 VPU and the 9200/Pro, based on the codenamed RV280 VPU.

Last year we took the performance crown in the high-end. This year we deliver performance to the whole market, said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President, Marketing and General Manager, Desktop, ATI Technologies Inc. By rapidly driving our high-end technologies into the mainstream, we bring a compelling game experience to users across the board. Delivering three extremely sophisticated visual processors at once underlines the strength of our engineering teams and our ability to execute.

Gateway, Fujitsu Siemens and NEC are all announcing systems powered by the new RADEON boards. Gateway has chosen the RADEON 9800 PRO as the graphics powerhouse in their new 700XL system, which will be available soon. Fujitsu Siemens has selected the RADEON 9200, RADEON 9600 and RADEON 9800 products for its Scaleo PCs and NEC has chosen RADEON 9200 products for its Packard Bell range and the RADEON 9800 PRO for the NEC iSelect.
All the major gaming-focused system integrators have also chosen the new RADEON products. ABS Computers, Alienware Corp., CyberPower, Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, MDG, and Voodoo PC will include RADEON 9800, RADEON 9600 and RADEON 9200 products in their current and upcoming systems.

ATI and its board partners, which include Connect3D, FIC, Gigabyte, Hercules, Hightech, PowerColor, Sapphire, Tyan, Visiontek, Wistron and YUAN, will announce and ship products based on RADEON 9800, RADEON 9600 and RADEON 9200 technologies starting this month.

RADEON 9800

Targeting the ultra-high-end/enthusiast segment, the RADEON 9800 products deliver unequaled performance, features, image quality and stability, which are the key criteria for hardcore gamers everywhere. A 256-bit memory interface and eight powerful pixel pipelines provide the brute force and finesse to deliver real-time, Hollywood-caliber graphics – even for the most demanding next-generation games – and sets it apart from anything on the market. Programmable shader engines, full speed, full floating-point precision and support for the latest Microsoft DirectX 9.0 and OpenGL feature sets ensure games look great even at breakneck speeds. RADEON 9800 products illustrate an important point – you don’t have to sacrifice performance for image quality.

RADEON 9600

Delivering the best product in the enthusiast segment is also crucial to winning mind share in the performance and mainstream segments, which represent large portions of the graphics hardware market. The RADEON 9600 series brings cinematic realism and unprecedented power to the performance segment, where customers are looking for the most advanced features and performance, at a more affordable price. Driven by its full floating point architecture featuring quad pixel pipes and dual vertex engines, the RADEON 9600 series of visual processors deliver amazing performance, full support for the latest Microsoft DirectX 9.0 and OpenGL feature sets and advanced anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering technologies. The first of ATI’s products to be developed using an advanced 130 nanometer production process, the RADEON 9600 products offer an excellent entertainment value.

RADEON 9200

Powered by an advanced quad-pipe rendering architecture, the RADEON 9200 series delivers a dazzling visual experience with the highest performance in its class. With a full suite of performance and image quality-enhancing technologies including full support for the AGP 8X and Microsoft DirectX 8.1 standards, and streaming video de-blocking capabilities, features unique in this segment, RADEON 9200-based products deliver sharp, clear graphics and video imagery. RADEON 9200 products offer an unbeatable value, with prices right for the most price-conscious consumer.

CATALYST

All of ATI’s products, including these newest additions, are supported by CATALYST, ATI’s unified suite of software. CATALYST includes the only DirectX 9 driver that is Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certified, a key criterion for OEMs and corporate customers.

Over the weekend, both Intel and AMD reduced the prices of their processors, paving the way for the arrival of their new chips. Intel cut the prices of all its desktop Pentium 4 processors by as much as 21 per cent while, AMD, just a day later, cut prices on selected Athlon XP's by as much as 32 per cent.

This price reduction is the first for the two processor competitors since the beginning of this year while, it has been even longer since the last price cuts. Both AMD and Intel have had, in the past, regular price cuts but a bad spell in the PC market has forced them to focus on means of increasing revenue. It is however, claimed by analysts that they have left the cuts late but are still within their usual target, ordinarily, they look at cutting prices about once per quarter and this is about that, said Dean McCarron, an analyst with Mercury Research.

Intel Cuts

Intel's cuts were made in order to prepare the market for the arrival of the 3.2 GHz Pentium 4, expected in Q2, 2003, while further cuts upon the introduction of the chip are also expected.
Intel begun the cuts in style by reducing the 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 price by 8 per cent, from USD 637 to USD 589. They also cut 6 per cent off the price of the 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 chip, from USD 401 to USD 375.

Intel also dropped the prices of their 2.4 GHz, 2.5 GHz, 2.53 GHz, 2.6 GHz and 2.66 GHz chips by 21 per cent each.

The 2.6 GHz and 2.66 GHz chips were reduced from USD 305 to USD 241, while the 2.5 GHz and 2.53 GHz chips went from USD 243 to USD 193 and the 2.4 GHz from USD 193 to USD 163.

AMD Cuts

AMD were not quite as sweeping in their price cuts but instead tried to make strategic reductions in order to match their rivals actions. The Athlon XP 3000+ and 2800+ chips remain at USD 588 and USD 375, respectively. The prices of several desktop Athlon XP processors however, were reduced. In this way AMD are trying to make their mid-range processors, the ones that make up the bulk of the sales, more attractive to consumers and system builders.

The Athlon XP 2700+ fell from USD 349 to USD 267, a drop of 23 per cent. AMD also cut the price of the Athlon XP 2600+ chip from USD 297 to USD241, a 19 per cent reduction. The Athlon XP 2400+ price dropped 27 per cent, from USD 193 to USD 141. While the XP 2200+ chip received the record cut for the quarter by being reduced by 32 per cent, from USD 157 to USD 107.

AMD's next chip, the Athlon XP 3200+, is expected near the end of Q2 of this year at which time the company is expected to introduce further price cuts.

New information is beginning to surface, concerning the market manifestation of ATI's R350 chip. According to the Inquirer.net, new boards, based on the chip will launch very soon and will bring the Radeon range to the 9800 mark. Both a PRO and a plain version will be made available.
The European launch of the cards will take place at CeBit, in Germany. The 256 Mb version of the card will be labeled the 9900, a PRO version will also be released, and will arrive just a short while after the 9800.

Clock speeds are expected to reach either the 375 or 400 MHz mark while the basic design will remain the same i.e. simple DDR memory at 375 MHz and 0.15 micron architecture. Despite the lack of change in its architecture the 9800 PRO is expected to be about 40 per cent faster than its predecessor, the 9700 PRO while it is expected to also defeat nVidia's GFX.

Since the card will retail in April, 2003, nVidia will have a very short stay in, what is proving to be, the red hot Graphics Throne.
